Summary

In September 2021, the skeletal remains of an unidentified individual were found by a property owner in rural Dallas, Georgia. Investigators were called to the scene and determined that the remains were that of a white male, who was between 24 and 60 years old. It was estimated that the man’s height was 5’ 6” to 6 '2'' at the time of his death. No other identifying characteristics were available.

Upon further investigation, officials discovered a zip tie along with the remains that appeared to have been used. They also noticed two abandoned vehicles near the remains located about 100 yards away on the power lines. One of the vehicles has been identified and is not involved and the other vehicle is registered to a known gang member. It is believed that the remains may be related to that vehicle.

Following the discovery of the remains in September 2021, the case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as case number UP89733. Despite the exhaustive efforts of law enforcement, the man’s identity has remained a mystery. With few leads for investigators to pursue, the case went cold.

This identification brings long-awaited answers to the Kratzer family.

In 2023, the Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation submitted forensic evidence to Othram in The Woodlands, Texas to determine if advanced DNA testing could help identify the man. Othram scientists successfully developed a DNA extract from the provided evidence and then used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile for the man. Othram's in-house forensic genetic genealogy team used the profile in a genetic genealogy search to develop new investigative leads that were returned to law enforcement.

Using this new information, a follow-up investigation was conducted leading investigators to potential relatives of the man. Reference DNA samples were collected from a relative and compared to the DNA profile of the unidentified man. This investigation led to the positive identification of the man, who is now known to be Thomas Joe Krazner, born January 18, 1959. If he had been alive when his remains were found, he would have been 62 years old.

Authorities confirmed that Kratzer was reported missing in February 2014 after his family had not heard from him since October 2013.

The investigation into what happened to Thomas Krazner continues. Anyone with information that could aid in this investigation is encouraged to contact the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office by calling 770-443-3010 and referencing agency case 2021-09220092 or NamUs ID UP89733.

The identification of Krazner represents the 27th case in the State of Georgia where officials have publicly identified an individual using technology developed by Othram. Visit DNASolves to learn about other Georgia cases where your support can help bring long-awaited answers to families.
